Whenever I get into the field I feel it’s important to bring along my sketching materials. For projects such as the Chilean field guide, sketching was of paramount importance to try and get a feel for the behavior and postures of the species instead of relying on museum specimens and in some cases a complete lack of photographic material. Most of my fondest memories of the five months I spent in Papua New Guinea in 1992 are captured in my field notes and drawings. I feel that some of my better works are field sketches that attempt to capture the essence of the bird in its habitat. Increasingly, I’m bringing my paints into the field with me and I hope to have more of this kind of work to show here in the future.
