The Icterids of the Americas was my first professional foray into bird illustration, published by Helm Ltd in 1999. This book takes a comprehensive look at the biology and identification of the Icterids of the world, written by Alvaro Jaramillo. The plates generally contain several illustrations of the various ages of both sexes for each species. With the completion of this book, Alvaro and I went on to tackle a field guide to the birds of Chile along with the help of another illustrator David Beadle. This was a four year project that was completed in 2003 and was very well received by reviewers and birders alike. In the midst of that project, I was approached by the National Geographic’s Birds of North America guide to complete a number of plates for their third and fourth revisions. From here I became involved with the Field Museum of Chicago and Louisiana State University’s Birds of Peru guide, of which I was one of 13 illustrators. Currently, I’m involved in a project to cover the field identification of Brazil’s birds (in three separate volumes) for Bret Whitney and Fernando Pacheco. My work here will include the shorebirds, terns, jaegers and diurnal raptors. I have also included examples of other publications that my illustrations have appeared in over the years. Book plates are all painted in watercolor and gouache.
